The library of the Casa di Goethe is a reference library open to the public with presently approx. 6000 volumes on Goethe's time, the tradition of journeys to Italy, German and Italian literary and intellectual history and the cultural relations between the two countries. Many books are also used for exhibition purposes; especially bibliophilic treasures such as first editions of Goethe's works, important later editions, illustrated editions, travel guides and reports by other travellers to Italy. In addition to the first editions and press prints, an extensive collection of illustrated editions of works from contemporary to modern provenance represents a focus of the library worth reading and viewing.

The library consists of two collections:

The Casa's Goethe library is based on a private library, which the collector and publisher Richard W. Dorn has systematically assembled over more than 60 years (Dorn Collection). With the help of the Federal Government and the German Research Foundation, this special library was purchased for the Roman Goethe House in 1991. The collection has been catalogued and published by the collector according to a specially designed system. (In der Ferne gegenwärtig. Katalog der Goethe-Bibliothek Dorn / bearb. und hrsg. von Richard W. Dorn und Michael Drucker. Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz. Grundwerk 1986, 414 S, ISBN 3-447-02614-6, Ergänzungsband 1993, 137 S., ISBN 3-447-03264-2.)

Since 1989, new publications, rare books and Italian titles have regularly been purchased (AsKI holdings). Both collections were digitally recorded in 2002 and have been made available online. Although the subject indexing so far is only available for the Dorn collection, the search can be narrowed down thematically by means of full text indexing.
